Shoe Fit Guide
Shoe Fit Guide
Finding the right shoe fit is one of the most important decisions in your running journey. Because fit varies by brand and model — even within the same size — this guide is designed to help you understand what to look for and when to ask us for help.
1. Length: Getting the Allowance Right
A proper running shoe should have approximately a thumb's width (about 10–12 mm) of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Your foot swells during runs, especially on longer efforts, so a shoe that feels snug standing still can become uncomfortable after a few kilometres.
- Sizing up half a size is common for runners — don't be surprised if your running shoe size differs from your street shoe size.
- Trail shoes often run slightly shorter due to protective toe boxes; sizing up is even more common in that category.
- Brands vary: HOKA, Brooks, and New Balance tend to run true to size; some ASICS models run slightly short. Always verify in-model, not just by brand.
2. Toe-Box Width: Room to Splay
Your toes need room to spread naturally at push-off. A toe box that is too narrow can cause discomfort, blisters, and black toenails over time.
- When you press down on the widest part of the shoe, you should feel your foot but not feel pinching on either side.
- A slight dome of material over your toes when standing indicates enough height and width.
- Models with notably roomy toe boxes include the HOKA Clifton, New Balance Fresh Foam 1080, and Brooks Ghost (standard width). Narrower fits include some race-day models designed for speed.
3. Regular vs. Wide Widths
Many key models at BackRoads are available in both standard (D for men, B for women) and wide (2E for men, D for women) widths. Fit varies significantly by model, so a wide in one shoe may feel similar to a standard in another.
- You may need a wide if: you feel pressure on the sides of your foot in a standard width, your foot overhangs the midsole, or you have bunions or a high arch that pushes outward.
- Stick with standard if: the shoe feels secure through the midfoot and heel with no slipping or side pressure.
- Ask us which models we carry in wide — availability changes seasonally.
4. Heel Hold: Locked In, Not Locked Down
Your heel should feel secure — no slipping up at the back — without any pinching or hot spots on the Achilles. A small amount of movement is normal, but excessive heel slip causes blisters and reduces efficiency.
- Try the heel-lock lacing technique if you experience slip: use the top eyelet loop to create a locking loop before tying.
- Heel counters vary by model. Stiffer counters (common in stability and motion-control shoes) lock the heel firmly; softer counters feel more accommodating but may not suit everyone.
- If heel slip persists in your correct length, consider sizing down half a size and checking toe clearance again — you may need a wider model at a shorter length.
5. When BackRoads Staff Can Help
Our team is here to help you find the right fit — whether you're buying your first pair of running shoes or troubleshooting a longtime issue. Come in and we can:
- Measure both feet (most people have one foot slightly larger — we fit to the bigger one).
- Assess your gait and foot shape to narrow down suitable models.
- Pull multiple models in your size range so you can compare fit side by side.
- Answer questions about specific models, widths, and last shapes in our current inventory.
We can't diagnose medical conditions or prescribe orthotics, but we'll always tell you honestly when a visit to a healthcare professional may serve you better.
A Note on Fit Variation by Brand and Model
Shoe lasts (the moulds shoes are built on) differ across every brand and often across models within the same brand. A size 9 in one shoe may fit like an 8.5 or a 9.5 in another. Always try on or verify the specific model you're buying, not just the brand or the size on the box. If you're purchasing online and haven't tried a model before, reach out to us — we're happy to advise.
